Sophie and Ricardo Aldaya's Secret Relationship

The Shadow of the Wind

Sophie and Ricardo Aldaya's secret relationship is a coercive affair whose consequences outlast its brief, hidden meetings. Sophie recognizes the danger in Ricardo but is drawn into a relationship shaped by secrecy and unequal power; when she refuses his demand to end her pregnancy, he threatens her into silence. Years later, he reappears seeking a relationship with the son he had once tried to erase.

First Encounter and Secrecy

A week after their first encounter, Ricardo waited for Sophie outside the music school on Calle Diputacion. Without speaking, he led her to a new, still-unoccupied building two blocks away. Its bare apartment, a maze of corridors and galleries without furniture or signs of habitation, became the setting for their concealed meetings.

Ricardo told Sophie that he had thought about her all week and offered to let her go if she had not thought about him. Sophie shook her head. Their meetings continued for ninety-six days, always in the same apartment at the corner of Diputacion and Rambla de Cataluna: on Tuesdays and Thursdays at three in the afternoon, for no more than an hour at a time.

The Affair and Its Concealment

The secrecy did not end when Ricardo left the apartment. Sometimes Sophie stayed behind, alone and distressed. On Sundays, she looked to the hatter, Antoni Fortuny, for signs that he understood her changed condition, but he did not recognize what she was concealing. She accepted his promise of marriage while already suspecting she was pregnant with Ricardo's child; she was afraid both to tell the hatter and to lose him.

The contrast between the two men shapes the stakes of her situation. The hatter's kindness and warmth offer Sophie the prospect of marriage, while Ricardo's power governs the affair and its aftermath. Her silence allows her to proceed toward marriage without revealing either the meetings or the child's paternity.

Threats and the Pregnancy

Ricardo recognized that Sophie was pregnant before she could bring herself to admit it. He gave her five hundred pesetas and an address on Calle Plateria, ordering her to get rid of the baby. She refused. He then threatened her and warned her not to disclose their meetings or say that the child was his.

Sophie told the hatter that thugs had assaulted her in Plaza del Pino. He believed her, as he believed her when she said she wanted to marry him. At the wedding, a funeral wreath was mistakenly sent to the church. The guests treated it as a florist's error, but Sophie understood it as a sign that Ricardo had not forgotten her. The episode leaves the coercion of the affair present even as her marriage begins.

Ricardo's Return and the Relationship's Legacy

Years later, Sophie saw Ricardo again. He had become head of the family empire and was the father of two children. He said he wanted to know the boy he had once tried to erase and give him the opportunities a son of his blood deserved. He also claimed that, although the child had not crossed his mind for years, he could no longer stop thinking about him.

Ricardo's return turns the old secret into a connection between generations. His wish to approach the boy is presented alongside his dissatisfaction with his firstborn, Jorge, whom he considered weak and reserved. The relationship's legacy is therefore not a reconciliation between Sophie and Ricardo: it is Ricardo's late attempt to claim a place in the life of the child whose existence he had once ordered Sophie to conceal.
